rota viral infection: a significant disease burden to libya.

چکیده
rotavirus is a common infection causing 450,000 deaths annually primarily in children 5 years and below. despite the high burden of disease, little is known about the epidemiology of rotavirus in libya. the aim of this study was to estimate the rotavirus disease burden among libyan children.a cross-sectional study was carried out prospectively among children 5 years old and below between august 2012 and april 2013. stool samples of children with diarrhea attending the outpatient department or admitted to the pediatric wards, at three public hospitals within the northwestern region of libya were tested for rotavirus. the seasonality, symptomology demographics and outcomes of rotavirus cases were determined and compared to other diarrhea illnesses. an estimated incidence rate per 100,000 children aged 5 years and below was determined.a total of 545 children with diarrhea were identified for participation. results of rotavirus immunoassays determined 57% of cases were caused by rotavirus. inpatients were more likely to be rotavirus positive than outpatients (58% vs. 53%, p<0.05), most rotavirus positive cases (86%) were found among children below 2 years of age. rotaviral cases peaked in the winter, constituting 76% of diarrheal illness in february and very few rotavirus cases in the summer months. the incidence rate of rotavirus diarrhea was estimated at 640/100,000 children aged 5 years and below.rotavirus infection poses a significant disease burden in libya. preventive measures such as proper hygiene should be emphasized. introduction of vaccination against rotavirus into the national immunization program should be examined, as it would likely be a cost-effective investment.

متن کاملThe Burden of Congenital Heart Disease in Libya
Early diagnosis and proper and early medical or surgical intervention for most of the CHD could provide anatomical correction and a normal life expectancy. Patients born with severe forms of CHD are at approximately 12 times higher risk of mortality in the first year of life, particularly if they are missed in the neonatal period. Mortality in the first year of life was 18% for all CHD that are...
متن کاملDetermination of a Viral Load Threshold To Distinguish Symptomatic versus Asymptomatic Rotavirus Infection in a High-Disease-Burden African Population
We evaluated quantitative real-time PCR to establish the diagnosis of rotavirus gastroenteritis in a high-disease-burden population in Malawi using enzyme immunoassay as the gold standard diagnostic test. In 146 children with acute gastroenteritis and 65 asymptomatic children, we defined a cutoff point in the threshold cycle value (26.7) that predicts rotavirus-attributable gastroenteritis in t...
متن کاملPsoriasis Causes Significant Economic Burden to Patients
INTRODUCTION Psoriasis results in expenses to patients from many cost sources. Psoriasis treatments may result in considerable time and traveling costs, yet many studies fail to account for these costs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the multidimensional economic burden of psoriasis to patients. METHODS The study was based on 232 Finnish patients with psoriasis or psoriatic arthr...
متن کاملViral hepatitis and the Global Burden of Disease: a need to regroup.
The publication of the updated Global Burden of Disease (GBD) [1,2] provides a broad overview of the challenges to global health. As with the previous surveys [3], it is likely that over the coming years, the GBD will be used (and abused) to justify greater resources to combat different diseases. Whatever concerns there might exist about the robustness of the data, in the absence of any other s...

Early, after in utero infection with LCM virus, SWR/J and HA/ICR mice developed manifestations of immune complex disease. Observations based on nursing such mice with virus-infected, immune, or noninfected mouse mothers indicated that maternal antiviral antibody was responsible for the early immune complex glomerulonephritis. Despite comparable viral persistance, in utero-infected offspring fai...
